The Vision: Every so often, we're given the opportunity to design without preconceived expectations—to explore an idea simply because it deserves to exist. For House Beautiful's Whole Home 2022, we set out to create a space that challenged convention by blending two seemingly contrasting aesthetics: the moody richness of Dark Academia with the timeless charm of Grand Millennial design. The goal wasn't simply to combine styles, but to prove they could coexist in a way that felt thoughtful, immersive, and entirely livable.
 

The Approach: Every detail was considered through the lens of how the room would be experienced, not just how it would be photographed. Rich layers of texture, collected furnishings, and dramatic contrasts created depth, while softer elements brought warmth and familiarity. We designed the bedroom as a retreat for the introvert—a place that encourages slowing down, reading, creating, reflecting, and finding moments of quiet throughout the day. Every corner was intentionally designed to invite someone to linger a little longer.
 

The Outcome: The finished space became more than a showcase room—it became an experience. Bold yet inviting, nostalgic yet fresh, the design demonstrates how unexpected combinations can create something entirely new.
